Kibble and YNAB (You Need A Budget) share the same idea: a zero-based budget where every dollar gets a job. YNAB is a mature web and phone app that imports transactions straight from your bank. Kibble is a Windows app that keeps your budget on your own computer, finds transactions in your Gmail instead of logging into your bank, and adds a full Business mode for freelancers. YNAB wins on bank sync, phones and shared budgets. Kibble wins on privacy, price and business books.

Facts about YNAB come from its own website, checked October 29, 2026. Links are at the bottom.

The same method

If you know YNAB, Kibble will feel familiar. Money comes in to Ready to Assign, and you assign it to categories until there’s nothing left. Overspend in one category and you cover it from another. Kibble AI can fill in a month from your last three months, or suggest how to fix overspending, using your own Claude or ChatGPT plan. See Set up your first budget.

Bank sync vs your inbox

This is the biggest difference. YNAB’s Direct Import connects to your bank through Plaid or MX, read-only, and YNAB says it doesn’t view or store your bank credentials.

Kibble never connects to your bank. Instead it reads your Gmail for charges, refunds and deposits, like receipts, card alerts and pay notices, and puts them in an Inbox. Nothing goes into your budget until you click Add. Kibble remembers each store’s category for next time. It’s a little more hands-on, and you never hand your bank login to anyone. See Review your Inbox.

Where your data lives

YNAB keeps your budget in its cloud, encrypted at rest and in transit, and says it doesn’t sell your financial data. Kibble keeps your budget in a file on your own PC and works offline. Syncing between computers and the web app is coming soon. See Sync and the web app.

Where YNAB wins

Pick YNAB if:

  • You want automatic bank imports.
  • You budget on your phone or a Mac. Kibble is Windows only for now.
  • You share a budget with a partner or family, up to 6 people.
  • You want a long track record and a big community.

Where Kibble wins

Pick Kibble if:

  • You don’t want to connect your bank to any app.
  • You want your budget on your own PC, working offline.
  • You freelance and want invoices, time tracking and tax estimates in the same app.
  • You’d rather not pay a subscription. Kibble is free during early access.

Getting started

Set up your first budget, then connect your Gmail so receipts land in your Inbox.
