Best YNAB alternatives
Six ways to keep giving every dollar a job, from free and private to fully synced.

The best YNAB alternatives are Kibble for a private zero-based budget on Windows with freelancer books built in, Monarch for automatic syncing of every account, EveryDollar for a simple zero-based budget with a free version, Actual Budget for a free, open-source option, Goodbudget for envelope budgeting shared with family, and a spreadsheet if you want full control.
Facts about other tools come from their own websites, checked October 29, 2026. Links are at the bottom. Kibble is ours, and we’ve noted where others win.
Why people look beyond YNAB
YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, after a 34-day free trial. It runs on the web and phones, with no desktop app, and imports transactions directly from your bank. People switch for the price, to avoid connecting their bank, or for features YNAB doesn’t have, like business books.

1. Kibble: best for privacy and freelancers
Kibble is a zero-based budget for Windows: income lands in Ready to Assign, and you give every dollar a job. Your budget is a file on your PC that works offline. Instead of connecting to your bank, Kibble reads receipts and alerts in your Gmail and waits for you to click Add. Business mode adds time tracking, invoices and quarterly tax estimates.
Not ideal for: phone-first budgeters, Mac users, or couples sharing a budget. Read Kibble vs YNAB.
2. Monarch: best for syncing everything
Monarch connects bank, card and investment accounts and shows your whole financial picture, with flexible budgeting and sharing with a partner. There’s a 7-day free trial and no free plan.

3. EveryDollar: best simple zero-based app
EveryDollar plans every dollar before the month begins. The free version is manual. Premium adds bank connection and reports for $79.99 a year or $17.99 a month, with a 14-day free trial for new users.
4. Actual Budget: best free and open source
Actual is a local-first envelope budgeting app that’s open source. You run your own sync server, or pay a hosting service like PikaPods to run it. Bank sync is optional, and it can import YNAB budgets.
Best for: tinkerers comfortable with a little setup.
5. Goodbudget: best for envelope budgeting together
Goodbudget brings the paper envelope method to the web, Android and iPhone, and lets households share a budget. It has a free plan and a paid Premium plan; check its site for current limits and prices. See envelope budgeting.
6. A spreadsheet: best for full control
Free, flexible, and entirely yours, if you keep it up. Start with our free zero-based budget spreadsheet, or read Kibble vs budget spreadsheets.
