What is Recruiter screen?
The short first interview, usually 15 to 30 minutes with a recruiter, to check basic fit before the real interviews.
A recruiter screen (or phone screen) is usually the first conversation after you apply. It’s short, often 15 to 30 minutes, and the recruiter’s job is to decide whether to pass you on to the hiring manager.
What they usually ask
- “Tell me about yourself.” (Have a 60-second version ready. See Tell me about yourself.)
- Why this company, and why now?
- Salary expectations and timing.
- Location, remote work and work authorization.
- A quick check of your experience against the must-haves.
What they listen for
Clear communication, real interest in the role, and no deal-breakers. It’s not a deep skills test.
Questions to ask them
What the next steps are, what the team is like, and what success looks like in the first 90 days.
An example exchange
Recruiter: “Why are you looking to leave your current role?”
You: “I’ve loved growing our support team from three people to twelve, and I’d like to do that at a bigger scale. This role builds out support across two regions, which is exactly the next step I’m after.”
It stays positive, says nothing bad about the current employer, and ties the answer back to this job.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not knowing the job. Read the posting twice and have one clear reason you want this role.
- Rambling through your history. Keep “tell me about yourself” to about a minute.
- Being vague about logistics. Be clear about location, start date and visa needs up front.
- Skipping the follow-up. A short thank-you email the same day keeps you top of mind.

Questions people ask
Should I give a salary number in a recruiter screen?
Many people give a researched range, or ask for the role's range first. Either is fine. Just be ready for the question.
How should I prepare for a recruiter screen?
Reread the posting, have a one-minute introduction ready, know your salary range and start date, and prepare two questions about the role. Fifteen minutes of prep is usually enough.
