What is Mock interview?
A practice interview that mimics the real thing, with questions, follow-ups and feedback afterward.
A mock interview is a rehearsal: someone plays the interviewer, asks real questions, follows up, and tells you how it went. It’s the closest thing to the real interview without the stakes.
Getting the most out of one
- Pick the type you’re facing: a recruiter screen, a behavioral interview, a skills deep dive.
- Answer out loud. Speaking is a different skill from writing.
- Keep time. Most answers should land in one to two minutes.
- Review the feedback, then try the weakest answer again.
An example session
You’re preparing for a product manager interview and pick a 20-minute behavioral mock.
- The interviewer asks: “Tell me about a launch that didn’t go to plan.”
- You answer out loud. It runs three minutes and never gets to the result.
- A follow-up: “What would you do differently?”
- At the end, the feedback says your stories are strong but long, and your results lack numbers.
- You rework the launch story in STAR shape, try it again, and it lands in under two minutes.
That last step, trying again right away, is where most of the improvement happens.
Who to practice with
- A friend: free and realistic, but they may be too kind.
- A mentor or coach in your field: the best feedback, but harder to schedule.
- An AI interviewer: available any time and patient with repeats. Good for practice volume, best mixed with at least one run-through with a person.
In Hunter
Hunter has an AI interviewer. Pick the job, the interview type and the length, then type or say your answers out loud. It asks one question at a time, follows up, and ends with a scorecard. Strong answers can be saved to your experience bank. See Practice a mock interview.
Questions people ask
Should I practice out loud or in writing?
Out loud, at least once. Answers that read well on paper often ramble when spoken.
How many mock interviews should I do?
Two or three before an important interview is a good target. Do the first early enough to fix what it shows, and a short last one a day or two before.
