What is Job board?

A website that lists job openings from many employers, as opposed to a company's own careers page.

Updated Nov 1, 2026By Bruce W.

A job board is a site that collects openings from many employers: LinkedIn, Indeed, and niche boards like Remotive or We Work Remotely. A company career site is the employer’s own jobs page, often run on a hiring system like Greenhouse, Lever or Workday.

Job board vs career site

  • Reach: boards show thousands of companies in one search. Career sites show one.
  • Freshness: the career site is usually first. Boards copy listings later, and sometimes keep them up after the job is filled.
  • Duplicates: the same job can appear on several boards with slightly different titles.
  • Where you land: applying on the career site puts you straight into the company’s applicant tracking system.

Kinds of job boards

  • Big general boards, like LinkedIn and Indeed: every industry, huge volume.
  • Niche boards for one field or kind of work: remote jobs, startups, nonprofits, design, engineering.
  • Aggregators that pull listings from other sites, which is why the same job often shows up more than once.
  • Government and school boards, like USAJOBS or a university career center.

Using them well

  • Discover on boards, apply at the source. Find a job on a board, then look for the original listing on the company’s careers page.
  • Check the date. Postings older than a few weeks are often filled, or about to be.
  • Set alerts for a handful of precise searches instead of browsing every day.
  • Watch for scams. Listings with no company name, vague pay, or requests for money or bank details are red flags.

In Hunter

Hunter searches both: company career sites on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday and more, plus public job boards. It merges duplicates, scores each job, and applies on the company’s own site when it can. See Run your first hunt.

Questions people ask

Are jobs on company sites posted before job boards?

Often, yes. Companies post on their own careers page first, and listings spread to boards later, sometimes days later.

Should I pay for a job board subscription?

Usually not at first. Most listings are free to see. A paid board can be worth it in a niche where it finds jobs that aren't posted anywhere else, so check what it offers before paying.
