What is Match score?

A number, often 0 to 100, that rates how well a job posting fits your experience and what you're looking for.

A match score is a quick rating of how well a job fits you. Job search tools compare the posting with your resume or profile and your preferences, like title, location and salary, and boil it down to one number. Resume checkers use a similar idea for keywords.

How to read one

The number matters less than the reasons behind it. Look for the strengths (what lines up) and the gaps (what the posting wants that you haven’t shown). A gap might be a skill you have but left off your resume. That’s an easy fix. Or it’s a real gap to address in the interview.

Our free resume keyword checker gives a simple keyword match for any job post.

In Hunter

Hunter scores every job from 0 to 100 against your experience bank and settings, and shows the strengths and gaps behind it. Two levels decide what happens next: jobs at 85 and up can be submitted automatically, and jobs at 60 and up go to your Review queue. You can change both. See Understanding match scores.

Questions people ask

Should I skip jobs with a low match score?

Not automatically. A score is a starting point. A job with one gap may still be worth a shot if you can speak to that gap in the interview.
