What is Tailored resume?

A resume adjusted for one specific job, so the most relevant experience and the job's own words come first.

Updated Nov 1, 2026By Bruce W.

A tailored resume is one you adjust for each job instead of sending the same file everywhere. Recruiters skim for fit in seconds, and many companies screen with an applicant tracking system first.

What changes

  • Order: the most relevant job or project goes higher.
  • Emphasis: bullets that match the posting stay, others get shorter or go.
  • Wording: use the job’s terms when they’re true for you. “Design systems”, not “UI kit work”, if that’s what they call it.
  • Summary and skills: rewritten for the role.

What never changes

Titles, dates, employers and numbers. Tailoring is picking and polishing, not inventing.

An example

The posting says: “Looking for a marketing manager with experience in lifecycle email, A/B testing and HubSpot.”

Your general resume says:

  • Managed email campaigns for a software company.

Tailored, using only true facts:

  • Ran lifecycle email for 30,000 customers in HubSpot, and A/B tested subject lines and send times to lift open rates from 21% to 29%.

Same job, same facts, now in the posting’s language with the result up front.

How long it should take

With a solid experience bank, tailoring takes 10 to 20 minutes per job: reorder, trim, swap a few words, rewrite the summary. If it takes an hour, your master list is probably missing the numbers and details you keep digging up. Tailor carefully for the jobs you really want, and use a lighter touch for the rest.

In Hunter

Hunter writes a resume for each job only from your experience bank, checks every line against it, and highlights every line it reworded so you can review them. See Tailored resumes and the fact check.

Questions people ask

Is tailoring the same as lying?

No. Tailoring changes order, emphasis and wording. The facts, dates and numbers stay true.

Should I tailor my LinkedIn profile too?

Not for every job, since you only have one profile. Make it match the kind of role you're aiming for, so it backs up the tailored resumes you send.
